If your rig is indeed a '53 flatbed, then a solenoid starter from a '49-'54 passenger car should fit right in. These are both six volt starters and the flywheels are compatible.
The starter off a newer 12 volt truck has a different starter drive configuration to match a different tooth count flywheel. They won't work on your truck.
You will have to change your ignition switch from a ON/OFF to a ON/START/RUN, or just add a little push button.
This is the way I understand it.
