Rod - the wire end in your pic above looks like the original female end that clips onto the sender stud, it's a split brass plate inside the plastic .... you maybe have a different sender? it should be as David sez, a brass nail-like stud sticks out of the sender, the terminal slips onto it - not quite like on the gauges, but similar
