Chevrolet used a "Power Divider" that was lever shifted from the cab that sounds about the same. It has one input shaft and two outputs (one to each rear). It had 3-speeds, 2 underdrives and direct. They first started offering factory installed Tandems in 1956 on the 2-1/2 ton 8000 & 10000 Series trucks.
