Well let's see here. I pulled out my Haynes 83-91 Camry Manual. Ok It says if the Check Engine light stays on all the time THEN a diagnostic code is recorded and stored. It's NOT going to be as easy as turning the ignition switch off and on 2 or 3 times (I've seen that on a few vehicles) but it aint gonna work on a Camry. You would have to go into the ECU (Electronic Controll System) and do some wire jumping. If the check engine light is on all the time 1st thing to do is get a service manual. Also it has been my experiance that on older cars you gonna get more than one code come up for different problems that you haven't noticed and that aren't causeing this particular problem. Also there might not even be a code for this particular problem or it will point you to a device and say the problem is there but that device could be malfunctioning because of another device. Sure I like the distributer cap/rotor/wires and vaccum leak ideas (there's even a fuel pump filter inside the gas tank). Bottom line get a manual.
Adios, Kip

Yep and I might as well and this> If the car is dying out and staying dead for a while check for spark and check for gas BOTH even if there is NO spark still check the gas. A faulty automatic shut down relay will shut down the coil and fuel pump.
