Your info is backwards. BB below the pointer is advanced and above is retarded.

You'll get best mileage and performance when your timing is advanced as far as your engine will allow. That means, setting the initial timing "on the BB" then advance the distributor slightly CCW (this will advance the timing) and take it for a drive. Continue this little drill until it starts to ping under load. Then back it down slightly until the pinging goes away.

When I do this to mine, I can barely see the BB in the timing hole well below the pointer.
