Hy herme, as cletis has said the first three digits after the "B" in the engines serial number give you the engines cubic inch displacement [c.i.d.], this is a quirk of GMC engines. The casting numbers can come in handy if you are trying to figure out if the engine is completely stock, or if some parts have been replaced, hope that helps.
