If your 54 235 engine valve cover has vent holes in it, it probably had the manufacturer's crankcase ventilation setup at some time in its history - or the valve cover is not the original to your truck (car?). There was a setup that plumbed an [ugly ol'] hose from the valve cover to the intake manifold port just below the carburetor (the one with the 1/2 NPT plug in it).

There are illustrations of this both in Chiltons' 1954-1963 repair manual, and the Chevy trucks Factory Assembly Manual 1955-59.
