To clarify this, military blocks do have a "place" for a mechanical fuel pump. There are just no holes there. Using a fuel pump gasket for a template, many people have put the holes in their engines.

To answer your original question, your bellhousing will fit the 302 block. You'll need a GMC flywheel. Yes it is worth the bother.
