I'm curious about putting the later 6 in an AD, since it will take the higher revs accompanying the stock rears better than the older engine

I've driven my '66 w/230 on the interstate for over 100 miles, taching at LEAST 3k the entire trip. And I've done several 50-70 mile stretches taching 3500 rpms. Totally stock! No problems whatsoever. :p
