If you had the 12 volt generator installed along with a new 12 volt voltage regulator and the charging systems works, but doesn't register a charge (or discharge) on the ammeter, then I would surmise that the ammeter is broken
The generator charges the battery THROUGH the ammeter. If your system is staying charged, then it's a mechanical failure of the little movement inside the ammeter. Does this sound right.
