Just my two cents. I have Linde forklifts that have cartridge filters like this. When I change the oil, I pull the cartridge before I drain the pan. After I remove the cartridge, I stuff a clean rag into the canister, then go about my oil change.
By the time I get back to the canister, the rag has soaked up all the oil and I simply remove it and install the new filter.
Buying a spin on type would certainly be a good move in my book.
