I'm in the process of changing out a leaking pinion seal in my 57 3100. The shop manual calls for measuring the bearing preload before disassembly so it can be matched after repairs. It recommends checking the torque with an in/lb torque wrench with one wheel free. My wrench starts at 20in/lb and the wheel will turn with less than that. So, the preload is too light to measure. The pinion does not have any excess play and no noise has been noticed. Should I just mark the nut and pinion and reuse the nut and forget about it, or how can I properly set it up with a new nut as recommended and get the proper preload? Thanks for any ideas anyone may have.
