Hmmm. Loose distributor? Perhaps, if that noticably loose, there's the source of your original 'stumbling' problem. How did the old fuel pump check out?
As for timing, well, I rely more upon my vacuum gauge than my aged ears. Heck, my 8-track tapes still sound good to me!
