I get reasonable output in my '56 from a set of kickpanel speakers (the molded Pioneer abs type) and a set of fully enclosed speakers mounted on the lip of the gas tank behind the seat (I have '99 Tahoe center row seats so use the area under the seats for storage otherwise I'd consider the under-seat speakers. The behind the seat set is slightly muffled so this location is probably best for mid-range and base speakers. I think you're going in the right direction.
