I tried 3 different springs mounted according to the shop manual and the picture shown above, they actually created tension on the heat riser to hold it in the "apply heat to carb" position and then with heat applied to the spring, the force of the exhaust on the valve would allow it to open and flutter. I gave up after those 3 attempts and went to sears and picked up a collar that would faster to the heat riser shaft. I welded a short piece of metal to the collar and attached the throttle cable to the short piece of metal. now when its cold and I start the truck, I first pull the throttle cable out, engaging the heat riser and push it back in when I reach operating temperature. I did not have a good use for the throttle cable up till that time anyway.
