Could the fact that you had to buy eight mean those little washers are actually packaged for a Chevrolet V-8 and they just happen to fit your valve cover too....methinks this might be the case. The main thing is you have them.
Take your time to flatten the flange on the valve cover and eyeball it to make sure it is square, flat and true. They don't leak as a rule.
