Someone here did an axle swap that might interest you. With some searching you may find it.

The guy cut the ends of the axle housings off the stock axle, and put those ends on a newer axle. He was then able to use the original hubs and brakes, while having a much more highway friendly axle ratio.

Obviously I've simplified the process a bit.
