Ok, I'm rebuilding a '55 235 (first time) and the manual states: install the two alignment studs on the manifold side of the head to hold the gasket in place and to assist lining up the head as it is placed on the engine...
The way you worded that is confusing. It led me to believe you were referring to the two alignment studs for the intake manifold. I had to get out the book because I couldn't see what these studs had to do with the head gasket.
I don't know what manual you are using but the 1958 Chevrolet Truck Shop Manual actually states, "Place two cylinder head guide pins through the gasket and screw them into the cylinder block front and back holes on the manifold side to hold the gasket in position and guide the cylinder head in place."
This makes much more sense than, "...the two alignment studs on the manifold side of the head...."
As Woody said, you can make your own guide pins.
