If it had a column shift it was the 3 speed & if it has a hole in the tunnel it had a 4 speed. Automatics were available but not very common. You can find used ones by posting on the parts wanted section on the swap meet on this website. Seals gaskets & brgs are readily available & hard parts are still around. A lot of Stovebolters are putting S-10 5 speeds in these trucks to get the o-drive. There is a lot of info on the swap in the Tech section & search.
