That's not what we're saying. Your current filter is probably set up as a bypass filter, only about 10% of the oil that is pumped goes through the filter, then is dumped back into the oil pan. There is another option when you have the engine apart for rebuild, which is to convert the engine to a full flow filter, where all of the oil pumped passes through the filter before going to the oil galleys to lube the engine. The full flow filter is better than the bypass, but the bypass is better than no filter. There is an article on the conversion int the tech tips section.
