What you need to know, is that the brackets and pulleys need to be a matched set. Whatever water pump your brackets and pulleys take is the one you should use.

You can't use a long pulley, and a short pulley, or a long pulley set with a short alternator bracket, or whatever. They all have to jive together.

The most recomended way is to score a complete matched set off of a vehicle.

If you're putting the V8 down onto the original 6 cylinder engine stands, I'd use the long pump setup. The six cylinder engine was located further back in the framerails that the V8 was, so the long water pump setup will compensate by making the engine longer, which puts the fan closer to the radiator.

If you're switching the V8 frame stands, they use the front set of holes in the frame which put's the engine several inches further forward. In that case, I'd use the short pump setup so the fan doesn't crowd the radiator by being too close.

If you have any confusion at all, just send me a PM and we'll straighten it out. I'm a moderator over at the www.67-72chevytrucks.com forum board. Don't let the name fool you, we talk 66 trucks too. This is a real common question and a common swap. I've done it plenty of times, as have lots of other guys over there. You can also come over there and talk and PM me over there if you'd like.
