Hy Nathan 1965 c10, When you bought the starter, were there not instructions for checking the clearance between the flywheel and starter gear included, and there should have been some shims, just in case they were needed, it sounds to me like there is little or no clearance between the flywheel and the starter gear, hope that helps.
