Trust me ,you can install one in backwards , did so on my half ton international a long time ago, when going or trying to go into first it would grind like heck and it was a lot of extra work because my brother-in law and I had just installed a long block
to go with it, dont know if this is the trouble but it could be, my brother-in law did not believe it till we took it a part again,, before we messed with it the clutch would only slip a little, decided to put a new clutch in being that we had pulled the eng,,at any rate, good luck with yours...Fred
