GMC's are sometimes built better/heavier than their Chevy brothers. I would think that a 1/2 ton would not have factory "helpers" on it. The ones on all my 2-tons is on top of reg springs and have two ears to touch on frame when loaded/needed. Seven leaves may not be too far from standard, maybe they had HD options then? My Chevy Assembly Manual shows 8 leaves in back on both 1/2 and 3/4 ton trucks. Looks like 3/4 ton has longer leaves in some cases. As long as "helpers" aren't touching other springs all the time, ride shouldn't suffer. Only thing then is maybe the truck sits up higher then normal cause of extra stack of leaves between axle mounts.
