Since you need a longer engine anyway, I would look for a GMC six cylinder. They are about 1-1/2 inches longer than a 235 and have much better heads and metal quality, and you can get them up to 302 cubic inches.
The mid 40's 4 speed is going to be a crashbox, synchros didn't show up until '48 in the AD trucks.
