If the 65 has the original system it has an external regulator.
So you could have a problem with one or both. Do the tests with a meter and isolate the problem, it's much cheaper that way than throwing parts at it.
I saw the ice road episode and since it was a diesel it could run without batteries, probably had no lights though. Alternators do not create electricity like the older generators did, they need power input to get something out.
