I don't necessarily know better, but I can tell you what the shop manual says, if you haven't seen it.
Regarding spring disassembly, the manual says: "Spring clips will have to be bent open", assuming you are asking about the clinch type clips on the 3100.
The manual also recommends against any lube on the springs, as it "will cause too lively spring action resulting in short spring life." The teflon strips would have the same effect. Some guys claim an advantage to the rate decrease, as it provides a softer ride and less fatigue on the spring for longer spring life. Whom to believe? One could compensate for any "lively" action with better shocks.
I've read that the teflon strips can work themselves out over time. There are graphite compounds and graphite paints available for this purpose, too.
