The new Dewalt stuff is coming out with A123 batteries that do not have the dangerous construction of previous lithium ion batteries. They have a very long expected life and should be a jump ahead of previous technology. Google A123 batteries. I have a friend who is working on an electric vehicle project using them. They are expensive but otherwise the best thing yet.
