As long as it is a US GMC truck, it should have a GMC engine in it. GMC was kind enough to stamp the displacement as the first 3 characters of the serial number. If there are only 3 characters with nothing else stamped, then you have a factory replacement engine in there. GMC left the pad blank so you could stamp your own numbers if your truck was titled by engine number.

The 302 I have just has "302" stamped in that spot. I think I might stamp my name on there.

I think the 3/4 ton would have had a 248 in '53.
