If it is a Hydramatic, it is most likely a 4 speed. When you shift the gearshift lever to reverse and shut the engine off, that transmission will lock into park and the car will not move..
If it goes forward smoothly and backs up, what is to hate ? They were used all through the '50's and known as a durable transmission..I agree with GL..
