of all the components on the original radio, a broken volume control is the hardest to deal with. This is because the design using a switch for tone control was not very common. Most of the radios at the time used a continuous control.
In your case it depends how the conversion unit used the original control. It would probably be best to take it to someone who does the conversions on a regular basis.
