Elevator bolts are flat on the head. The original bolts in the steps are slightly domed or rounded on the top of the head, but not as much as a regular carriage bolt. The head is about 1/8" tall on the original step bolts, which is greater than that of a 1/4" elevator bolt and less than a carriage bolt.
