I did the same thing as Achipmunk did. I have a 15 inch planer. I ran the boards thru just enough to take off the old varnish, I also ran the edges on a jointer to get the varnish off the sides. Instead of a cabinet shop try a lumber mill, lots of cabinet shops will not run varnished boards because they dull their planer blades.
