Thanks. Made a mistake. It's an in-line 6 235 and yes I think it's a later 60's saginaw. Saginaws don't appear to have a sterling reputation for durability from these posts.
I also don't want to blow the engine running it on the freeway. With these gear rations and a Rebuilt rearend with Patrick's 355:1 ring & pinion, can I cruise the freeway without worry?

It sounds like a later Saginaw 4 speed if it has a hurst shifter. These aren't as strong but have good ratios. They will stand up to a 283 just fine though.
