I run a stock distributor with a dual point conversion, which will do the same thing as the mallory. The main thing it does is increase the dwell. That gives you better idle and starting capabilities. It also greatly increases the point life, because the contacts only see half of the arcing. One contact does the closing and the other does the opening. The points my distributor uses have larger springs so they don't bounce at higher rpm. The mallory dual point is probably good to 5500 or so. You can also run a hotter coil with the mallory. The setup is better than stock but an electronic setup is better yet. The other thing is that the points are pretty expensive, the ones for mine are $16 each.
I picked up the conversion kit for my stock distributor on the bay of e for about $12.
