A couple of months ago I started hearing a popping noise coming from the rear of my '63 C-20 (5.13). It would happen when I would start to back up. It would only happen occasionally. I figured it was a u-joint. I dropped both halves of the shaft and found one bad u-joint, I replaced all three and the carrier bearing. I still hear the pop occasionally, especially under a very heavy load (starting up with 10,000 pounds plus of trailer).
Any body got any ideas? Ring gear & pinion? Spider gears? does anyone have any idea where to get parts for this rear end? My local axle shop said they can't get them, or it would be very, very expensive.
Will the rearend (pumpkin) out of a '58 one-ton fit? I've got a spare one of those.
