Four on the floor, You just put in a 6 volt alternator?So you want to keep the earlier style flywheel? I tried to swap the parts of a 12 and 6 volt starter one time,but the pieces didn't line up correctly,it might work with a little machine work.You can always use a 12 volt foot starter from a 56-60 truck. I didn't use the bypass hose on the first 261 because it was just a short block,so I used 235 stuff to dress it out.The other engine was complete, but but I switched over the stat housing so I could use regular GM style thermostats.I think the by pass hose is for heavy duty truck use were the driver reams the [censored] out of the engine before its warmed up and the thermostat is opened. Creates localized hot spots and possible engine damage? Most guys with vintage engines drive moderately until the engine is fully warmed up.It certainly wouldn't hurt to use the bypass if you have the parts.
