Hey George - I didn't men to sound so blunt about your transmission.
What I meant is that, you have a transmission as good as a 54 as far as structure and performance. The only thing is that it is older than a 54. If you decide to rebuild, I would go back with 54 gears. As I understand it, some of the gears were used even later than 54. wdoftexas knows all about that stuff!!
