Coils were mounted upside down from the factory. I'm sure there was a good reason why, probably had to do with getting water inside. I'd keep it that way for originality sake, and for folks in the wetter states.
The only disadvantage that I know of is that coils have been known to leak, dripping all manner of gooey corrosive stuff onto a nicely painted engine.
