My '49 had the closed driveshaft 4.11 which disintegrated one day on the way to work. I removed the closed driveshaft and differential and installed a '57 differential in it's place. I kept the '49 axle, the '57 3.90 plugs right in. I then installed a '62 3 sp+od, found a driveshaft, had it shortened and now drive anywhere at 65-70 mph @ 2100 rpms (.70 od X 3.90 rear= 2.73 final drive, 215 85R 16's).
I don't drive it like it's a sport car and with my stock suspension and tall tires I'm tall in the saddle and can see over the little cars in front of me so I feel I'm a better driver due to my increased visibility.
