I have a 1945 GMC 2 1/2 ton (military) with a defunct 270 I-6 (not rebuildable). The 270 is getting a bit scarce and wickedly expensive to rebuild. I believe the 216 - 235 - 261 will mount up fairly well, but the 216 and 235 are too small, and the 261 is as scarce as the 270. I have another idea. There is a newly rebuilt 1963 Chevy 292 I-6 sitting in my shop from a previous project. It, of course, has the newer sbc style bellhousing pattern. Is there an adaptor that fits between the engine and bellhousing that would mate this engine to the '270' bellhousing? I would like to stay with the existing bellhousing in order to retain the foot starter (IF it can be made to work with the 292) and the odd-ball Clark 5 speed (fully UNsynchronised - but a joy to drive once you get the hang of it). I am not aware of any bellhousing that will mate the 292 to the Clark.
Can anyone share any advise on the feasibility? How about clutch, pilot hole adaptors, etc? I would like to keep it as original as possible, but the 292 would look reasonably accurate to casual observers. Thanks.
