I once built a 350 with 283 heads that was a real snappy performer at street RPMs. It ran out of breath on the top end, but just popping around locally, or crusing the freeway, it was a great motor.
It would not be hard to make a mild 350 look like a 283.
A friend of mine once bought a Ford pickup that he thought had a 360 under the hood. He later discovered that his unusually quick truck had a 428. Those extra cubes worked wonders!
