Timing marks are on the flywheel and are viewable through a small opening in the bellhousing, just above the starter. It will have a pointer in the middle of the opening. You will be looking for a "ball" pressed into the flywheel. Sometimes they are missing, so look for the indentation if it is. GMC's have marks for 5 deg. UC as well as another UC mark......at least the one I had did.
The plate under the distributor with all the marks on it is an "octane" selector........don't let it confuse you. There are NO timing marks on the harmonic balancer, so don't look there.
