If you can see the circles or dots for gear alignment your okay. Not all timing gears have threaded holes. The 235 metal gear is aluminum, which would strip out with a puller.

The balancer doesn't necessarily match with the end of the crank, but the loose fit worries me. Did you have the balancer rebuilt? If not, I would get it done. Also, did the mechanic drill and thread the crank snout for a bolt? Useful for retaining a balancer.
