All the 1-ton trucks had 8800lbs capacity on the door plate but for the truck to actually be rated for that it had to have dual rear tires of max. size. The actual ratings can be found in a shop manual reprint.

I don't have a manual with the '54 figures but for a '51 1-ton they ranged from 6200 lbs with 7.00X17 8-ply tires to 8800 lbs with 7.00X18 8-ply duals.
