Chevs of the 40s probably offers two approaches. I know they carry the [censored]'n stuff, which is not like the original, because I've seen it in their showroom. I believe they also carry the same original repop stuff you see elsewhere.
I'm like you, I'd look real hard at doing it myself, and then give up and buy a kit... The advantage is that after studying the project that much I have a pretty good idea what I want to order.
