Seems like if you got some thick wall steel tubing, slit it in half, and then used it to reinforce the notch it should work. ( similar to how to do a notch for lowering rear axle) I'd post it over in the engine & driveline forum as they answer rod questions pretty regularly to see if you get a hit.
