All depends how much sound you want and what portion of it you like to hear.
With short mufflers and tail pipes exiting before the rear wheels you hear the whole range of sounds of the engine, plus the sound that bounces of walls and other cars in the other direction.
Gives a rawer and louder sound.
Same mufflers with longer tail pipes exiting straight out the back and under the bumper would make things a lot quieter inside the cab, even with windows rolled down.
Gives a softer and quieter sound.
One thing is very important for a balanced good tone - equal length pipes !! Also reduces popping at deceleration.
I had a little fun this summer and drove with straight pipes exiting right under the cab...
Crazy how huge the sound of a 235 with headers and straight pipes get.
With 24x3 tips it sounded like a big block or 3 Harleys at once - no kidden.
Way too loud for a driver, but was fun for about a week.
