Hi Bill, there's no need for the flat piece of metal above the core support. Under the core support, it would act as a shim for your hood to grill alignment. On the 41-46 trucks there are also springs installed on the core support mounting bolts below the frame crossmember to allow some flex in the front end, similar to the way the cab is mounted.
