AAA is the BEST investment I've ever made. They have saved me so many times. If you have an old car you like to drive here and there, definitely get the premium package where you get 100 free tow miles per call. Up to 3 (?) calls a year I think. Maybe its 7? I can't remember.
A few things I might add to the list of what to bring is JB Weld. The instant type. Also, duct tape, a towel or blanket to lay down on if you have to get under the car and several rags or a roll of paper towels.
I brought a 63 International Travelall across California and I swear, without JB Weld and duct tape - it would never have made it.
What an adventure you'll have! Oh and, in addition to everything people have told you to bring for the car, bring a camera and document the trip. What a cool little photo album that would make whether it goes smoothly or not. Who knows what interesting moments might lie ahead!
